Writing Samples for Work Sampling

Oh, glorious Spring Break! Yesterday I stayed in pajamas all day long, took a bath, then changed into clean pajamas. LOVE.

Spring Break is also a great time to get caught up on projects that you just can't finish while school is in session. One thing I have to get moving on would be Work Sampling. Work Sampling Online is our report card. We have 55 indicators and have to put in notes, pictures, or work samples into a computer system to prove the child can do these tasks (standards based tasks). It can be overwhelming but is totally worth it when you see the progress of a student.

Anywho, last week I worked to get writing samples for each of my students (there are 20!). Besides work they do at center time, the easiest way to get a sample was morning work. I gave each student three cards with vocabulary words on them and asked them to copy the words, which can be a tough thing to do for some. Here are the results:

Simple post, but to the point. I'm proud of those little boogers! :) They have come a looong way! Now, back to my delicious coffee!

Thinking of Winter--Starting Our Winter Unit

Geez Louise, we've only been back to school for three days and I am exhausted! We're all getting back into a routine, teachers included, and it's taking a bit to settle in. We have been doing lots of learning, and this week we kicked off a unit on Winter!

I wanted to know what the kids knew about winter, and they had lots of great ideas. As you see on our chart, one kiddo even said that Santa comes in winter! What a smartie!

(Sometimes when I'm writing charts, I give the kids an activity to keep them busy, so they are busy but listening. With this chart, they glued aluminum foil onto scrapbook paper in the shapes of snowflakes. No pictures of it, but I found the idea here: Shiny Snowflakes.)

Today we learned that writer's add labels to their pictures to give us more information, and they were writer's today by labeling a snowman together! After they told me what each label was to the snowman, they used dry erase boards to copy the label. It was the first time we had tried that out, and they did so well and I am so proud! Here's a few pictures, only I just realized I didn't take pictures of the chart! Whoops! I'll add that tommorow. Here's a couple of hardworking kiddos, copying the labels from the chart (which, not bragging or anything, is a KINDERGARTEN standard. They are so smart, but I may just be partial!)

We also did a Science experiement, but that's for a later day! Hope you're all having a great start to 2012!

Ahh! Holidays! And My First Item on TPT (Community Helper Sort)!

I am so so glad to still be on vacation! It's wonderful to have absolutely nothing to do (except all the cleaning I haven't done since August, HA!). I have even read two books! GASP! That is unheard of!

I'm posting my first ever item on Teachers Pay Teachers (although it is being ornery at the moment--won't load!).  I have to warn you, I am a little green, so it isn't fancy by any means. It just gets the job done!

Here it is--a community helper sort. Sort the tools by the community helper. Download it for free here: Community Helpers

Woo! I have some pictures to post later, and lesson ideas for winter. With only three weeks in January, I have a lot to get in! So many fun things to do.

Later days!

Hello!

Hello Friends!

This is probably the 109043875394753 blog I have started on the interwebs, but I am hoping this one lasts for a long time! Recently (like many teachers) I have become so very addicted to Pinterest, and so completely inspired by all of the awesome teacher blogs and ideas that I have found there. I think that  one of the most amazing things about teaching is sharing with others, and so this blog will hopefully be a place where I can share my ideas (they seriously run through my head constantly--I don't know how to turn it off sometimes!) and find cool ones from other awesome teachers.

Later days!
